Al Devereaux, Class of 1955
Colonel Alfred Boyce Devereaux Jr., Ph.D., U.S. Army
retired, age 70, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, in Tallahassee. The service
will be at 4 p.m. EDT Thursday, May 22, at St. John's Episcopal Church,
with internment at a later date at the United States Military Academy at
West Point. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel
(850-877-8191) is handling arrangements.

Nature Center, 2106 Meridian Road, Thomasville, GA 31792. Colonel
Devereaux graduated from the United States Military Academy (Class of
1959) and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 25 years. He
served in Korea and in the Vietnam War. He received his Ph.D. from The
Ohio State University and was a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.
His last military assignment was as the District Engineer for the
Jacksonville District. Following his retirement from the military, he
served the State of Florida as the Assistant Secretary of the Department
of Environmental Protection and the Director of the Office of Beaches
and Coastal Systems. For his service, he received the Bill Carlton
Award, the highest honor of the Florida Beaches and Shores Association.
During his retirement he sang with the Tallahassee
Community Chorus and the St. John's Choir. Survivors include his wife of
45 years, Melissa Potter Devereaux of Tallahassee; children, Stephen
Boyce Devereaux and Melissa Inez Devereaux, both of Atlanta; three
grandchildren, Lily Margaret Conable, James Barber Conable and Emma
Croslin Devereaux; and one sister, Joan Devereaux Watson of Seattle.
