Oscar Piastri achieved a great debut in Formula 1 in the 2023 season after scoring a sprint race win. Moreover, the Aussie won a couple of races in the 2024 season and was almost on par with teammate Lando Norris. Amidst the preparations for the upcoming season, Ex-F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya assessed that Piastri still has the most to prove in the 2025 season.

Despite impressive performances, Oscar Piastri fell short in head-to-head stats against Lando Norris in the 2024 season. Piastri was out-qualified by his teammate with a whopping difference of 20 to 4. Regardless, the 23-year-old achieved the record for 100% lap completion over the season. However, Juan Pablo Montoya wasn’t much impressed with the Aussie’s performances.

Montoya claimed that Piastri had the most to prove in the coming season. The Colombian pointed out that he expected the 23-year-old to perform better than he did over the season. Norris took a massive step forward while the Aussie failed to do so in the 2024 season.

Oscar Piastri is the driver with the most to prove next season. I really expected him to step up this year and I am a little surprised he didn’t. I really felt that this year he would be better than Lando, but Lando took a massive step forward and Oscar didn’t.

Oscar Piastri aims to improve performances during the qualifying sessions

Oscar Piastri was unable to shine in the one-lap pace against Lando Norris in the season. Piastri acknowledged his shortcomings in performances and highlighted that qualifying performances was one of his biggest struggles. The 23-year-old accepted that he did not make his life easy after botching up qualifying sessions. As a result, the Aussie will have to improve his pace in the last hundredths and tenths of a second.

The biggest one has been leaving a few too many positions on the table in qualifying. I don’t think I’ve ever really made life easy for myself in the races, in that aspect. So, I think that’s definitely the big focus of the off-season, just trying to get those last hundredths, last tenths.

McLaren’s dominant pace helped both drivers maximize points over the race weekends in the 2024 season. The team will need to hold onto the pace in the coming season and aim to start the season off on a positive note. Rival teams, especially Ferrari and Red Bull might be closely competing with Woking for the Constructors’ Championship.
