Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominated Formula 1 at the start of the ground-effect era. However, 2024 came as a wake-up call for the four-time world champion and his team. Now, Verstappen has signaled that Milton Keynes has work to do for next season.
The 2024 season saw Red Bull fall behind McLaren and Ferrari in the pecking order. The Austrian team realized that it had overlooked detrimental development mistakes in 2023. Nevertheless, Max Verstappen managed to pull off an incredible campaign to win his fourth title in a row.
Now, the four-time world champion has made it clear that things need to change at Milton Keynes if they want to win next year. This serves as a bold warning from the 27-year-old who has kept his future options open despite having a contract till 2028.
Red Bull can’t afford mistakes in 2025
Red Bull Racing will need to work around the clock over the winter break. The Austrian team cannot start the upcoming season behind its rivals. Max Verstappen did make impressive recovery at the end of 2024, however, this does not mean that Milton Keynes had magically got back its pace advantage.
The Austrian giant will get more wind tunnel and CFD testing than McLaren and Ferrari. This could provide a crucial advantage for Christian Horner‘s squad. The team must ensure that it can fix all underlying problems of the RB20 to prevent mistakes with its new car.
Moreover, Liam Lawson’s arrival shows that Red Bull is no longer content with just one car at the front. After losing the Constructors’ title, Milton Keynes recognizes the importance of both drivers fighting for victories consistently.
Max Verstappen is not shy of speaking his mind to the media. The Dutch driver’s warning hints that he would be ready to look elsewhere if Red Bull fails in 2025. Rival teams would be more than ready to open its doors for the 27-year-old. As such, pressure will be on Horner and his squad to give Verstappen a car capable of fighting for the world title.
