Sergio Perez has been sacked by Red Bull Racing. The Mexican driver will no longer be racing in Formula 1 after another underwhelming season against Max Verstappen at Milton Keynes. Now, Checo’s chances of a return are only getting slimmer.

The 34-year-old made his F1 debut in 2011 for Sauber, before moving to McLaren two years later. It was at Force India (now Aston Martin) where Sergio Perez proved himself as a capable midfield driver. This led to Red Bull’s decision to sign the Mexican alongside Max Verstappen for 2021.

Unfortunately, Checo failed to live up to expectations. The 34-year-old was a staggering 280 points behind his teammate in the standings this year. Now, all doors seemed to have closed for Perez in 2025. Though, there lies one outside chance for 2026.

Sergio Perez could be surprise pick for Cadillac

Cadillac is finally joining Formula 1 as an eleventh team in 2026. The project initially started by Michael Andretti will be supported by the deep pockets of General Motors. The all-American outfit is still undecided over its driver line-up.

GM wants one American driver at the team, most likely to be Colton Herta. However, the second seat remains open. Daniel Ricciardo has reportedly dismissed such a possibility. While drivers on the grid are unlikely to take such a risk on a new team for 2026. This leaves Sergio Perez as the front runner for Cadillac.

The Mexican driver is the ideal driver in the midfield. Checo can bring in points consistently, while acing tire management. Though, Perez has struggled in terms of pace in past two years, he could be what Cadillac needs to lead the project. The 34-year-old’s experience from Red Bull could prove vital for the new team.

Though, it is unclear if Sergio Perez has held discussions with Cadillac yet. The 34-year-old has not revealed his plans for the future. Though, a driver like Checo would not be able to say no if GM does approach him with an ideal offer.
