After winning three times on the PGA Tour in 2023, it seemed 2024 would be the year of Viktor Hovland. However, the Norwegian golfer did not enjoy the same type of success this year that he had in the previous season. Ahead of the 2025 season, he has once again parted ways with his swing coach Joe Mayo.
Hovland and Mayo had worked together for a while. At the start of the 2024 campaign, Hovland and Mayo surprisingly went in separate ways. The golfer would later work with Grant Waite and Dana Dahlquist. Following some poor results, he and Mayo came back together before the PGA Championship at the Valhalla course in May 2024.
At the PGA Championship, Hovland finished third, leading to many believing this to be the turning point of the year for him. However, it did not turn out to be that way.
The 27-year-old went on to miss the cut at the U.S. Open and the Open Championship and had just one more top-10 finish after the PGA Championship. In an interview with NorskGolf.com, the golfer stated that he and Mayo “disagreed a bit about the way forward“.

This also comes at a time when Hovland’s participation in the opening event of the year is still up in the air. A few days ago, he fractured his small toe on his right foot in a clash against the bed frame.

PGA Tour pro shares hilarious advice to Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler amid injury scare
Ahead of the new season, Viktor Hovland is not the only golfer who has suffered an injury. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler suffered a cut on his hand while preparing Christmas dinner and will miss the first event of the year – The Sentry. A PGA Tour pro has shared a bit of hilarious advice to both of these golfers.
Reacting to the news of Hovland and Scheffler, tour professional Michael Kim has wished the two stars well. In a post on X, he would hilariously urge the two of them to take a long break and focus on healing rather than coming back quickly.
Hey Scottie, Viktor,
— Michael S. Kim (@Mike_kim714) December 28, 2024
I sincerely hope that you both will recover quickly and get back to your usual selves…
but by all means… don’t be afraid to take some extra time off and not play Amex, Torrey, and WM to be specific. You can never be too careful.
MK
Both of these golfers have achieved a lot of success in the past two years. Given the current form of Scheffler, his absence from the field could be a massive chance for someone to shine and take away the first title of the 2025 season.
Speaking of Kim, he will not be playing in this event as this is a signature event, meaning the tournament will have a small field size. Kim did not meet the criteria to make it to the tournament and must wait a little longer to kick start his 2025 campaign.
