Ayrton Senna is a legend of the F1 and motorsport world in general. The Brazilian incomprehensibly dominated the grid during his reign over the sport. However, his tragic death in Imola in 1994 shook the motorsport world. Soon after, a life-size memorial was built in the memory of Senna, which locals have allegedly vandalized during Christmas celebrations.
The memorial was built by famous sculptor Stefano Pierroti in 1997 and was placed inside the circuit’s premises, near Tamburello corner. Over the years, drivers have paid their tributes to Ayrton Senna and it has been a place where fans have left memorabilia in honor of the three-time champion Brazilian.
However, according to Italian news outlet Il Resto del Carlino, items like flags and souvenirs were incinerated. Though the memorial was not attacked by the locals, such actions have hurt the sentiments of the fans worldwide.
Senna had won his three world championships in 1988, 1990, and 1991. The Brazilian champion had been in contention for his fourth title with Michael Schumacher in 1994 heading into the round at Imola. He looked set to take the title home in the Williams, but his tragic demise lost people out of words and such action is condemned by the motorsport world.
The administration was unhappy with the vandalism of the Senna memorial
On the other hand, fans were not the only ones who were left hurt by the actions of the locals. These actions would have inflicted a wrong impression of the city on the outside world. Subsequently, the city officials addressed the matter and denounced the misconduct.
The municipality of Imola was discontent with the way Senna’s memorial was treated by locals. They apologized for such misconduct and have taken multiple measures.
The municipality passed an ordinance which bans the consumption of alcohol in the area, alongwith glassware and bottles being prohibhited to take inside the track premises. This has been done to ensure that a similar incident does not take place ever again.
On the other hand, the F1 world has teams busy preparing for the 2025 season. McLaren is expected to continue their reign next year and would be the favorites for the title. But, Ferrari and Red Bull would be wanting to trip the Woking-based outfit and are slated to give a tough fight for the elusive championship.
