A 40-year-old record is on the verge of being broken. The NFL’s single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards set by Eric Dickerson in 1984 was dubbed a long shot to be broken. However, for the first time that record seems achievable.

Saquon Barkley has eclipsed the 2,000-yard threshold, a feat achieved by just eight players in NFL history until he became the ninth person to do this. The last time a running back went beyond 2,000 yards was in 2012 when Adrian Peterson ran for 2,097 yards.

Notably, Peterson won the NFL MVP Award that season. Saquon Barkley now has the chance to go on that same path and tie or beat both, Peterson and Dickerson’s numbers. The running back ranks third in the race to win MVP behind Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. His odds of winning the Award will increase substantially if he eclipses 2,105 yards.

The Philadelphia Eagles have become better on offense with Barkley. The team clinched the NFC East and now, the running back has an opportunity to create history against his former team, the New York Giants whom the Eagles face in Week 18.

It would be a fairytale ending to a historic season and what better team to achieve such a feat against than the one which overlooked you? Fans could not help but recognize his greatness and lauded him via X:

There is the likelihood of the Eagles opting to rest Saquon Barkley to ensure he does not get injured as the team will need him for the playoffs. However, it also seems unlikely that the organization would hold him back from accomplishing this feat as it is something that fans do not get to see happen frequently.

Barkley, who sits with 2005 yards currently, only needs 101 more yards to break Eric Dickerson’s 40-year-old record of 2105 yards in a single season.
