In the Battle of the Hodson River, the New Jersey Devils once again came out on top of their rivals, the New York Rangers. The Metropolitan Division leaders ran away as 5-0 winners. After the game, they took a brutal swipe at Rangers.

At the moment, things are not going too well for the Rangers. The 2023-24 President’ Trophy winners have fallen into a major slump after a hot start. On Monday night, they suffered their fifth defeat in their last six games.

Before the game, the team healthy scratched Chris Kreider from the lineup. In the past few weeks the team healthy scratched Jacob Trouba and Kaapo Kakko and later traded them away. The American star’s exclusion from the team attracted a few headlines before the game.

In the game, Jack Hughes once again scored against the Rangers. During their previous meeting earlier this month, Hughes scored once and had three assists in a 5-1 win.

This time he scored twice as he opened the scoring in the first period and gave his side a 3-0 lead in the second after Timo Meier had made it 2-0. Goals from Stefan Noesen and Dawson Mercer in the third period wrapped up another emphatic win for the Devils.

After the game, their social media team decided to have some fun. They would take a swipe at their opponents by sharing a GIF of a burning trashcan floating away on water. The logo of the Rangers was implemented on the trashcan, indicating it was them. “Safe travels across the Hudson,” the Devils wrote on X.

Devils take shot at Rangers following Kaapo Kakko trade

A few days ago, the New York Rangers traded away forward Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken. The New Jersey Devils took a shot at their rivals for this in the middle of the game.

During the 2019 draft, the name of Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko attracted several suitors. The Devils would pick Hughes as the first overall draft pick. The Rangers would then select Kakko as the second overall draft pick.

While doing so, the team would broadcast this to the fans at the Madison Square Garden. The famous arena would erupt in joy as the team selected the Finnish international.

Since then Hughes has become a major part of the Devils organization. Whereas for Kakko, he was unable to hit the heights as many expected. Despite scoring 61 goals and 131 points in 330 games, the 23-year-old forward was unable to make a huge name for himself.

In the middle of the third period with the Rangers 4-0 down, the Devils would play that video of the fans celebrating the draft of Kakko on the giant screen. After the video, the camera would pan towards Hughes, who would smile from the bench while watching the screen.

While the Devils continue to remain as the top team in the division, the Rangers keep on spiraling down. At the moment, the team are at 7th position in the standings with a 16-17-1 record. These two sides will face each other again in January. The Rangers would be hoping to avoid another big loss against them in that encounter.
