Former NHLer Sean Avery makes BOLD statement regarding HC Peter Laviolette’s future following Rangers’ slump in 2024-25 season

After starting the season with a 12-4-1 record, the wheels have come for the New York Rangers. The team has suffered a massive slump in form. In their last 17 games, the team has won just four of them and lost 13. Former NHLer Sean Avery has made a bold statement regarding head coach Peter Laviolette‘s future following this run of form.

The recent performances of the team have raised several questions regarding the team management. Despite trading away some players, the 2023-24 President’s Trophy winners have not shown much improvement. The future of Laviolette has become a point of debate.

Avery recently made an appearance at the Spittin Chiclets podcast and spoke with Paul Bissonnette and Ryan Whitney regarding his ex-team current form. During their conversation, the 44-year-old admitted that he would fire Laviolette after the recent results.

I’d fire him today. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. You have to, you have to, guys. In a big market like that, Eastern Conference Finals last year were that close. It starts. Unfortunately, that’s part of it.

The Canadian international though admitted that he would get nervous after firing the coach. He questioned who the Rangers would bring in if they part ways with Laviolette in the middle of the season.

Avery recently also mentioned that he had met General Manager Chris Drury and spoke about becoming the coach of the Rangers. He claimed that he has submitted an application for this role and also reached out to those who he would want in behind the bench.

The New York Rangers are obviously not having a good time on the ice. In a month’s time, the team has gone from the top spot to the bottom of the Metropolitan Division. This poor results have seen many Rangers fans attack GM Chris Drury and head coach Peter Laviolette. A former Rangers forward has now joined them and blasted the duo.

While making an appearance at the Snipes and Stripes podcast alongside Hall of Fame Jeremy Roenick and ex-NHL official Tim Peel, former Rangers forward Matthew Barnaby voiced his frustrations regarding Drury and Laviolette. He used some harsh words to slam the two Rangers executives.

I had New York contending for a f***ing Cup. Either it’s Drury or Laviolette, I don’t know which one, but I watch enough Rangers games to know that they are f***ing putrid.

The Rangers will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 28 with the hopes of avoiding a third straight defeat. After that, they go to the home of the defending champions, Florida Panthers before returning to MSG to take on the Boston Bruins in the New Year.
