Following six seasons in New York, defenceman Jacob Trouba is headed to Anaheim to join the Ducks on their road trip game to Montreal. His trade from the NY Rangers to the Anaheim Ducks has caught the internet’s attention as the former captain labeled it a “threat”.
In his introductory press conference via Zoom, Trouba expressed that the Rangers didn’t leave him much of a choice even waiving his no-trade clause to stay in NY. He’ll end his journey with the Rangers after six seasons and from being a captain since the 2022-23 season.
Jacob Trouba expressed that he felt “a threat” as the Rangers raised the stakes to either trade or put him on waivers. The sudden departure news came as a shock to everyone. The announcement was made during the team’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins as they called Trouba’s absence from ice a “roster management” move.
Jacob Trouba was asked his thoughts on how his trade transpired:

"I was put in a position this summer to make decision between my career and my family, and I chose my family. I didn't like that it was made public. Kind of an unfortunate ending to a lot of good times in New York" pic.twitter.com/sPi3apVp7C
Trouba did not hold back on his feeling of being suddenly removed from his position as he felt the Rangers made him choose between his family and career. The defenseman said he would choose his family “100 times” over his profession, and that’s what he did.
He’s happy to “move on” from this messy trade although Trouba believed things could have been handled better. Rather than making everything so public, Trouba said he would have preferred a quiet meeting and departure.

While New York Rangers teammates are upset about their captain leaving on a sudden note, they are focused on the games ahead. Keeping a tight lid on how they feel, Chris Kreider spoke on the upcoming games and how he wishes to keep his head straight especially given the situation.
Many echoed the same sentiment, like Mike Zibanejad, Vincent Trocheck, Jonathan Quick, and others. The Rangers took their time to appreciate every moment they got to play with Jacob Trouba while keeping focus on 2024-25 ongoing regular season games.

Ranger head coach Peter Laviolette said this decision was made after much discussion with president and GM Chris Drury. The NY Rangers will be adding defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and a conditional 2025 fourth-round draft pick in exchange for the Trouba trade.
