Despite winter’s chilliness the temperature in NY is boiling hot following the New York Rangers’ epic collapse in 14 out of 18 games. No one expected that a team that won the President’s Trophy would lose 14 games in the regular season like this.

Unfortunately, the arrow points at coach Peter Laviolette who is on the verge of getting fired sooner rather than expected. The team has unexpectedly gone quiet following the season start and the management has to do something about it.

According to Larry Brooks of NYPost, this stillness in Rangers may cost Laviolette his job. The team is currently carrying a record of 16-18-1 while standing 8th in the Metropolitan Division.

While GM Chris Drury talked about not wanting to fire another head coach after Gerard Gallant in May 2023, the situation in NY Rangers talks otherwise. Even insider Elliotte Friedman said that Brooks’ prediction on a possible firing may come true as he has the most information about anything happening in the organization.

But that’s what this splintered core has effectively done, even if Peter Laviolette remains behind the Rangers bench much like a broken general pleading with his troops not to desert the battlefield. It is only a matter of time, whether it is this week, next month or the moment the season ends.

Larry Brooks as per NYPost.com.

The team has already traded Kaapo Kakko, and Jacob Trouba, while one of their best players Matt Rempe is on the suspension hot list. Either they’ll send Rempe back to the AHL or keep him in the lineup.

Regardless, they’ll have to make a decision soon and change things for the better. Brooks in his column commented on how the “Rangers have quit on Peter Laviolette – and it will eventually cost him his job.”

Social media reacts to Rangers downfall and Peter Laviolette getting fired rumors

Insider Larry Brooks carefully noted how the “tensions boiling inside the locker room” has stopped the team on its track. While time is running out on the 2024-25 season, the players remain “unmotivated” and everyone is at a loss for words.

Fans on social media are raging and demanding a change, but where the change begins is the question. Is it the coach? The players? Or the environment in general?

One X user noted, “This is like witnessing a slow-mo train wreck.” Another commented, “What the hell is Drury waiting for?  Quenneville, Woodcroft.  Someone to get their attention.” Check out more reactions below:

Elliotte Friedman is guessing NY Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette has just been caught in the middle of a crossfire and unfortunately has to pay the price for it. Friedman believes Laviolette is also at a loss for words.

A sudden shift seems unlikely, but a boost of some kind may help the Rangers situation. But what kind of boost they need still remains the question.
