Damar Hamlin received the best Christmas present he could hope for. The Buffalo Bills safety was overjoyed when he found out that President Joe Biden on Monday signed the bill to improve accessibility to resources of heart healthcare around the country, HEARTS Act(especially in schools and athletic establishments).
Hamlin advocated for such a bill to come into existence ever since getting out of the hospital in April 2023. The new law (Cardiomyopathy Health Education, Awareness, and Research, and AED Training in the Schools Act of 2024) will provide specialized equipment for heart-related issues in every school.
In an interview with ESPN, Hamlin thanked Sen. Chuck Schumer for passing the bill.
Under the HEARTS Act, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will support CPR and AED training in elementary and secondary schools with the purchase of AEDs along with developing new emergency plans.
The passing of the new HEARTS Act was like a dopamine shot for Damar Hamlin
Hamlin became a major feature for the Bills during his second season in Buffalo. He played 15 games in 2022 before a week 17 fixture changed his life completely. While playing the Cincinnati Bengals for the playoffs, Hamlin collided with wide receiver Tee Higgins and his heart stopped beating for a short while.
The sixth-round pick was taken to the hospital after the medical team applied CPR and AED to restart his heart. He stayed under medical care for more than two months before returning to normalcy. However, Hamlin found a purpose outside of football. He decided to raise awareness among students by helping them learn CPR and the use of AED for emergencies similar to him.
The new HEART Act will only make his dream a reality much quicker.
