In a surprising turn of events, the Washington Commanders upset the NFC East-top-ranked Philadelphia Eagles by breaking their long-standing ten-game winning streak. However, more than the loss, fans were concerned about star quarterback Jalen Hurts who reportedly sustained a concussion after taking a severe hit.
Though the Eagles put together a tough-contested play against the divisional rival, their odds for a victory were reduced when quarterback Hurts had to leave the field in the first quarter as he hit his hand hard on the turf after taking a hit from linebacker Frankie Luvu.
He was immediately taken out of the game and did not return in the game. It was later announced that he had sustained a concussion and head coach Nick Sirianni came bearing more upsetting news on the press conference ahead of the Week 17 matchup, confirming that he would remain in concussion protocol for at least one week.

Since leaving the Week 16 game after the tough hit of the opening quarter, quarterback Hurts did not participate in the practice sessions throughout the week. Replacing him was Kenny Pickett– whom the Eagles acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.

While giving the sad but much-needed update on the Philly’s starting quarterback’s recovery from concussion, head coach Sirianni also expressed confidence in Pickett to manage in the absence of Hurts, since the Eagles cannot afford to break their momentum if they want any hope to be Super Bowl contenders.
However, Pickett himself is dealing with some injury sustained in his rib and is likely to wear extra padding to protect his rib during the Week 17 game against the Dallas Cowboys. Meanwhile, second-year quarterback Tanner McKee, whom the Eagles drafted in 2023 in the sixth round, is said to become the primary backup of Pickett next week or until Hurts returns.
