Max Verstappen defied all odds in the 2024 Formula 1 season. He was under the pump during the latter half of the campaign but despite this, was able to hold off Lando Norris. In light of the Dutchman’s fourth world championship, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has given a ‘difficult to beat Lewis Hamilton‘ verdict.

Helmut Marko has reminisced about the turbo-hybrid era when Mercedes and Ferrari were the top dogs. Moreover, because of this, Lewis Hamilton was able to amass championships for fun in the extremely fast Brackley-based team’s challengers.

Recently, the 81-year-old once again applauded Max Verstappen on his 2024 triumph and added the following.

Nobody else would have won this World Championship title, which is clearly down to Max and his extraordinary ability. Two years ago, it would have been impossible for him to beat Lewis Hamilton or the Ferrari’s. Now he has the maturity and knows that he also has to drive in position.

During the turbo-hybrid era, Hamilton operated in a league of his own. However, in 2021, Verstappen managed to stop the Brit’s hype train and snatched the world title in the last race of the season. Since then, the 27-year-old has not looked back and has kept on improving.

Verstappen charged his way from P17 to amass the victory in the extremely wet race.

Plus, I think the race in Brazil. The emotions went from being super upset in the morning, looking like you were going to lose a lot of points in the championship and it actually becoming a proper fight, to then, of course, winning the race from P17. For me, that is definitely a race that I’m very proud of in how we’ve handled everything. I think all those things together.

Verstappen has been nothing short of brilliant in the ongoing ground-effect era. The 2025 F1 season is expected to be extremely close and considering this, it will be fascinating to see whether the Dutchman would be able to amass his fifth consecutive world title.
