Perkins stated that he believes Chet Holmgren has the potential to be as great as Victor Wembanyama, if not better. Big Perk also mentioned that Holmgren has nearly the same skillset as Wembanyama, allowing him to dominate on both ends of the floor.
However, what sets Holmgren apart in Perkins’ eyes is his physicality and competitive spirit. Because of these differences, Perkins believes that Chet Holmgren is a more polished player than Victor Wembanyama.
Some of the differences in the eyes of Perkins perhaps arise from the difference in the surrounding cast of the two. Holmgren stands atop the Western Conference alongside a roster with championship expectations. Wembanyama on the other hand, is still in the midst of a middling Spurs roster.
Can Victor Wembanyama break out of sophomore slump?
Victor Wembanyama’s sophomore season has started slower than expected. After an impressive rookie year averaging 21.4 points and 10.6 rebounds, he won the Rookie of the Year award. This season, however, his stats have taken a dip. Through nine games, he’s averaging 17.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks, while shooting only 41.8% from the field.
On Saturday night, the San Antonio Spurs also suffered their worst defeat of the season yet, after losing to the 15th seed Utah Jazz. They currently sit 12th in the Western Conference with a 4-6 record. While the Spurs roster deficiencies have been a part of their losses, the primary issue with the team is Victor Wembanyama’s lackluster performances.
Many had placed MVP expectations on the sophomore, perhaps a little too prematurely. Wembanyama is still easing into the reigns of taking over the Spurs team as a leader and star player.
The indefinite loss of Coach Gregg Popovich hasn’t been of much help either, with the whole Spurs roster struggling to find their rhythm. For now, the pressure remains on Wembanyama to find his magic and regain last season’s form.
