The Cincinnati Bengals stay alive in their playoff quest after defeating the Denver Broncos in a do-or-die game in Week 17 of the NFL regular season. In the 30-24 OT win, quarterback Joe Burrow put up impressive numbers, throwing 39-for-49 for 412 yards and three passing touchdowns. The 28-year-old Iowan also rushed for 25 yards, scoring one rushing touchdown.

Joe Burrow has been one of the consistent players in the season so far. Despite the Bengals’ poor overall record, 8-8 after 17 weeks, Burrow’s numbers are a stark contrast. Burrow leads the league in passing yards with a potential 5000 passing-yard season looming. He has passed for 4641 yards and rushed for another 202 yards. The QB also updated the Bengals’ single-season most passing yardage, a record that was already in his name.

In Week 15, Burrow rewrote his own single-season record of 35 passing touchdowns, the most for any Cincinnati Bengals QB with a three-touchdown performance against the Tennessee Titans. Burrow has continued to script more records in the overtime win over the Denver Broncos on Saturday night. A flash forward from Week 15 to Week 17, the young stallion has updated the numbers to 42 passing TDs.

The 28-year-old Iowan also became the first-ever quarterback in NFL history to record 250+ pass yards and 3 passing touchdowns in eight straight games. The streak started in early November when Burrow passed five TDs from 251 yards against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Apart from the above additions, Burrow also became the 11th quarterback in history to record at least 40 passing TD in a single season. Dan Marino was the first to record a forty-plus passing touchdowns season in 1984 for the Miami Dolphins, a feat he repeated in 1986. Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady have three seasons with more than 40 passing touchdowns. Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Matthew Stafford have accomplished the feat twice.

Joe Burrow’s 437-yard, 4TD game invites MVP calls from multiple angles

Earlier, in the aftermath of the win over the Cleveland Browns, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky commented on the MVP race. Orlovsky noted that Joe Burrow should win the MVP in case the Bengals qualify for the playoffs. The recent win over the Denver Broncos has solidified Orlovsky’s comment and Burrow’s claim to an MVP title this season.

In seventeen games, Burrow has crossed the threshold of 4500 passing yards while joining an elite club of quarterbacks with at least 40 passing TDs in a season. Burrow has maintained consistency and avoided throwing interceptions for the most part, only 8 so far. Zac Taylor, the Cincinnati Bengals head coach lauded Burrow as the best player in the league.

I don’t know that anybody can stand on the field and watch Joe Burrow and say he’s not the best player in the world.

Zac Taylor remarked in the press conference

Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons once again reverberated that Burrow is an elite quarterback while suggesting that he should win the MVP if the Bengals make the postseason.

The Cincinnati Bengals are not in control of their destiny. They have one more game left against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bengals could be done with two opponents this week if the Indianapolis Colts manage to lose against the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins against the New York Giants.

In the next week, Joe Burrow and company will need to defeat the Steelers and wait for the Denver Broncos to lose against the Kansas City Chiefs. In short, the Bengals need to win their remaining game and the other three teams to lose at least one game. Nevertheless, there are several ex-players and other people who think that no matter the result, Burrow deserves to be in the MVP talks.
