Despite being in the league for a short duration, Amon-Ra St. Brown has proved himself worthy to be counted among the top receivers. In two of his past three seasons, the wide receiver has earned the honor of Pro Bowl and a first-time All-Pro honor in 2023.
As the star receiver enters the final year of his rookie contract, the Detroit Lions made the long-awaited decision and re-signed St. Brown in a four-year deal. A source close to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport shared that the Lions and St. Brown have agreed upon a four-year deal worth $120 million.
With this contract, the Lions not only made St. Brown the highest-paid wide receiver in the league but also made him the only receiver in the history of the NFL to have a guaranteed money of $77 million. St. Brown confirmed the news of his extension on his Instagram story, with the caption, “I can’t wait. I’m here, four more years.”
Leading the Lions to the NFC Conference championship game, St. Brown is coming off his best season posting 1,515 yards, 119 catches, and 10 touchdown receptions.
The Lions have been working on an extension deal since the NFL Scouting Combine by talking to his representatives. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported in March that both parties are likely to close the deal which will give the receiver $26-28 million.
Fans react to Amon-Ra St. Brown’s lucrative deal
With this deal, the Lions have tied St. Brown to the Miami Dolphins superstar Tyreek Hill for the highest-paid wide receiver. However, fans didn’t seem too impressed with the decision especially such a lucrative deal for a third-year receiver.
Many fans on social media called St. Brown an average or mediocre player, calling out the Lions for overpaying him. One fan wrote, “Over pay for a mid player,” while another wrote, “Highest paid WR in the NFL is nuts.” Here are some of the fan reactions:
However, many fans expressed their faith in St. Brown by mentioning his stats for three years and calling him a well-deserving player for such a lucrative deal. The onus will be on the 24-year-old when he gets back on the pitch next season.
