New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres will join the Detroit Tigers for his 2025 season run. Torres and the Tigers have agreed on a 1-year $15 million contract, ending his free agency time.

Following his move to Detroit, the 28-year-old has penned an emotional message on social media, thanking the fans and the team for everything they’ve done. Torres is expected to play second in the Tigers’ team while Colt Keith will shift to first.

Gleyber Torres made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees in 2018 after getting traded by the Chicago Cubs in 2016. He signed with the Cubs as a free agent on a minor-league contract before his spotlight debut.

Unfortunately, mistakes plagued Torres, especially in 2024 when Yankees manager Aaron Boone had him sit out on August 2 against the Toronto Blue Jays. He was also benched prior to this incident during the Subway Series and throughout 2024 he had a shaky performance.

Despite the struggles and tough times, Torres thanked the fan base for always being there for him. Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris noted how Torres has spoken to the infield coach Joey Cora about their development program.

This might have played a role in Torres joining the Tigers despite other offers from different MLB teams. According to Harris, Gleyber Torres “found this to be an appealing place” for his growth after looking into the coach, staff, and the team’s winning mentality.

Gleyber Torres has been wearing the pinstripes for a long time. Now he’ll don a different jersey following his $15 million move to Detroit. Scott Harris has been delighted to welcome Torres to their team and has noted how the work is still being processed. They’ll try to strengthen the roster even more before the 2025 race begins.

Harris noted that he’s happy with the direction the team is headed, and will try to add more players to further solidify the lineup. The same sentiment is echoed by the Yankees, who are far from done in the free market. However, they’ve been quite for a couple days, as free agency continues.
