Former NFL star Cam Newton seems to have high praise for the WNBA, but that came with a dig at baseball. While acknowledging the prominence women’s basketball has received in recent times, he drew an odd comparison with MLB by surprisingly calling the latter a ‘dying sport.’
While, it’s undeniable that the WNBA has achieved massive growth and success this season, especially because of Caitlin Clark, who was honored with AP Female Athlete of the Year; the most popular leagues remain the NFL, MLB, and NBA. However, Newton is of a different opinion.
During a recent edition of his “4th&1 with Cam Newton,” he stirred controversy by declaring baseball a “dying sport.” He gave a ‘hot take’ as he said, predicting that WBNA would surpass the prominence of baseball in the near future.
Baseball is a dying sport… Baseball isn’t even being played by Americans anymore… For those who take offense to it, it’s just the truth. It’s like, who’s really paying attention to baseball? Just recently, Juan Soto signed a staggering contract worth $765 million for a 15-year tenure to join the New York Mets– marking one of the largest deals in sports history. This contract exceeded the massive contract worth $700 million signed by baseball prodigy Shohei Ohtani and transformed the financial dynamics within baseball.

The bold take by the former Carolina Panthers quarterback ignited a heated debate as another participant on his podcast challenged his viewpoint by pointing out the more substantial international following of baseball.
