Kevin Durant crossed up Victor Wembanyama during the Suns versus Spurs match

On Tuesday night, the Phoenix Suns hosted the San Antonio Spurs in a thrilling NBA Cup West Group B matchup. The Suns, led by Devin Booker’s 29 points, secured a 104-93 victory, improving their record to 12-8.

While the win was crucial for the Suns, the highlight of the match occurred in the first half when Kevin Durant faced off against Spurs’ star Victor Wembanyama. Durant, with a bag full of tricks, found himself matched against the towering 7-foot-4 Wembanyama during a possession.

Durant capitalized on the mismatch with a textbook hesitation crossover, leaving the rookie off-balance before driving to the rim for a smooth finger-roll finish. Though Victor Wembanyama’s defensive prowess has been a focal point of his young career, Durant’s experience got the better of the Spurs sophomore sensation during their matchup.

The sensational move came right after Wembanyama was announced as the Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month earlier in the day. Wembanyama struggled early, going 0-for-7 in the first half.

But he found his rhythm in the third quarter, contributing 12 points and seven rebounds during an 18-7 Spurs run that cut the Suns’ lead from 13 to two. However, the Suns, led by Devin Booker’s offense, prevailed as Wemby finished the night with just 15 points on 6-18 shooting, a departure from his recent offensive outbursts.

Suns suffer big blow as Kevin Durant falls prey to another injury

While the victory was a morale boost for the Suns, it came at a significant cost. Kevin Durant exited the game in the second quarter after sustaining a left ankle sprain. The injury occurred as Durant drove to the basket and stepped on a defender’s foot, causing him to collapse in pain.

Durant left the court with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists in just 16 minutes of play. Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer later confirmed that Durant would undergo further evaluation on Wednesday before the team’s upcoming road trip.

Durant’s absence will once again raise concerns about his durability. Despite playing 75 games last season, a significant achievement given his recent injury history, he has already missed time this season due to a calf strain.

The Suns are scheduled to face the New Orleans Pelicans next, and Durant’s availability will be a key storyline. As the team adjusts to potential setbacks, Devin Booker and the supporting cast will need to step up in the 2x Finals MVP’s absence.
