Last week was a disastrous one for the Cleveland Browns. The team extended its losing record this season to 1-6 after it lost starting quarterback Deshaun Watson for the season and backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the same game.
To make matters worse, the entire crowd at Huntington Bank Field began to boo Deshaun Watson after he tore his ACL and had to be carted off the field. Despite the quarterback being visibly emotional as he left the stadium, the fans were brutal as they showed no remorse or sympathy towards him. This resulted in his teammates Jameis Winston and Myles Garrett speaking up for their teammate after the game and calling the fans out for this behavior.
Myles Garrett took it upon himself to clarify that Deshaun Watson has been nothing but a ‘model citizen’ throughout his days at college and in the NFL. Earlier today, the defensive end spoke out once again regarding the fan reactions last week and expressed his faith that they will do better this week as the team plays the Baltimore Ravens.

This week, the Browns fanbase will not be booing the team because Deshaun Watson will not be on the field.
The Cleveland Browns fanbase is frustrated with Deshaun Watson
The fanbase did not have the right reaction. To knock a man when he is down is the worst. Considering that the quarterback put his heart and soul whenever he took the field, there should be some amount of respect shown to him. With that being said, are the fans completely unreasonable for reacting this way?
Not really. Although controversial, look at the whole situation from a fans perspective. The organization goes all-in and signs a quarterback to a $230 million, fully-guaranteed contract at a time when his future in the NFL was uncertain. In exchange for this, the team gives up a lot of picks which hamper it’s ability to onboard fresh talent.
After this, Watson is not able to play for a year owing to the NFL’s penalty and the next year, he sustains a shoulder injury that keeps him out towards the end. This was his first complete season as a starting quarterback for the team.
There is a sense of urgency amongst the fans. They are tired of waiting to see the results and want immediate results. They expect Deshaun Watson to be the person to provide that return even if he is playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL.
They are taking their frustration out on that one player because, in their eyes, he is the one that has put the organization in a tough spot financially and from a competitive aspect. The recent allegations against him just made things worse for him as the public opinion against him was on the fence and this just pushed fans away from having any empathy toward him.
