“Scam about to happen” – Deshaun Watson and Browns agreeing for a contract restructure sparks WILD reactions on social media
The Cleveland Browns have added two more void years to Deshaun Watson's contract to gain more cap flexibility.

The NFL has witnessed some bad contracts over the years, but none compares to that of Deshaun Watson. The quarterback was guaranteed $230 million right after he found himself in legal trouble. At the time, the deal seemed to be a risky bet but now, it is clear that the Cleveland Browns lost that gamble.
With the Deshaun Watson experiment seeming like a failure so far, the Browns have not restructured his contract. He is still owed $92 million and the team’s latest move allows the franchise to distribute the dead cap hit over four years.
His initial contract contained two void years but now two more have been included.
As per NFL.com, the restructuring in no way impacts Deshaun Watson’s contract in terms of value or duration. He will be a free agent heading into the 2027 season.
This move will merely benefit the Browns organization which will gain some respite from dealing with a large dead cap amount. Cleveland will now gain some cap flexibility once the quarterback’s bloated deal ends.
Deshaun Watson will be back with the Cleveland Browns next season
After a disappointing season with 1,148 yards, 5 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, and a QBR of 23.0 over five games, Watson’s season ended prematurely after he sustained a gruesome torn Achilles tendon on his right leg. He has struggled to play an entire season for Cleveland as his first year witnessed him being sidelined due to his 11-game suspension and last year, he missed the last 8 games due to a season-ending shoulder injury.
It is clear that Cleveland has overpaid for their quarterback and despite pleas from their fans to release Watson, the team intends to get the best out of him for as long as his contract is valid.
The news of his contract restructuring came as yet another blow for fans of the team who are already in shambles. Here’s how they reacted to it via X:

What a deal. A cap hit north of 50M four years from now, the Browns are so bad at this.

The Browns gave up 3 first round, a third round, and 2 fourth round picks for Deshaun Watson and there are people on here celebrating how smart the team is for managing his awful contract. pic.twitter.com/esqgv8PtA0

This is the third time the team has restructured Watson’s contract. At this point, if they were to cut him or trade him then the team would suffer as it will incur dead money of up to $119 million in 2025, $73 million in 2026, $18 million in 2027, and $9 million in 2028. It makes sense for them to keep him on the roster and play out the entirety of his deal.
