The ‘No Fun League’ is back at it again. With players being fined for touchdown celebrations and trash talk becoming the new norm, the league’s most recent decision to levy a fine on Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has come under fire.

Hurts was fined $5,628 by the Eagles after he wore a pair of mismatched shoes in the team’s Week 15 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He wore a Hulk-green pair of Jordan cleats on his left foot while wearing a teal-colored shoe on his right toe.

It was a harmless style choice, one that the NFL’s official X account seemed to like at the moment. The league posted an image of the quarterback warming up in his mismatched shoes with the caption “The Return of Jalen Two Shoes.”

This was the second time that Hurts wore mismatched shoes, the first time was earlier this year against the Bengals after one of his shoes came off and he used a timeout to put on a different one as there was not enough time on the clock to get the original shoe back.

Jalen Hurts’ shoe did not feature ‘constitutional team colors’

The quarterback was not fined for the first time. However, this time was different, and the league classified his styling decision as being violative of the league’s uniform rules. The violation he faced a fine over was for wearing a shoe that was not one of the team’s ‘constitutional team colors.’

Interestingly, the NFL’s official account on X went on to delete the post of lauding Jalen Hurts wearing his mismatched shoes. Fortunately for the quarterback, Jordan Brand has stepped in and agreed to cover the fine for him. Even if they hadn’t volunteered, to Hurts, the penalty amount is not significant as he makes $51 million per year on estimate.

The NFL’s rulebook states that a player can wear shoes that are black, white, or any constitutional team color, or a combination of the aforementioned colors. It is an unnecessary rule as the color of a player’s shoe has no impact on his performance, but the league does what the league wants.
