The Chicago Bears are parting ways with Head Coach Matt Eberflus after over two disappointing seasons as reported by Ian Rapoport. The team came to the decision after the Thanksgiving matchup against the Detroit Lions which Chicago came close to winning after a remarkable second-half comeback.
Matt Eberflus’ decision-making skills and time management have been questioned on multiple occasions this season but the final straw came in the last 30 seconds of the Thanksgiving game. Despite having a timeout to call, the HC opted to keep the clock running and his team executed just one play, thereby blowing their chance to tie the score and force overtime.
As per Adam Schefter, Matt Eberflus will now be replaced by offensive coordinator Thomas Brown who will serve as the interim head coach for the five remaining games of this season. It has been a rough year for the Bears who have fired their second member of coaching staff after parting ways with OC Shane Waldron earlier this season.

Matt Eberflus is the first Bears’ HC to be fired during the season
The team’s fanbase began to vehemently call for his job after Thursday’s performance. His tenure was one that was shrouded in controversy, from the mishandling of Justin Fields to concerns of him repeating the same with Caleb Williams. Eberflus won 14 games and lost 32 in his tenure with the Bears.
He leaves with the third-worst winning percentage in the team’s history. Despite his mishandling of last night’s game, Eberflus in his press conference defended his time-management skills. He was of the opinion that the team was outside field goal range and the only way to get them into range was to keep the clock running. That response further infuriated the team’s fanbase.
The Bears have lost six straight games and sit at the bottom of the NFC North despite a solid 4-2 start to the season. Matt Eberflus’ decisions in close games have been his Achilles heel. In Chicago’s last three matchups, the game came down to the wire and he failed to make the right decision. The team will play out the rest of the season under Thomas Brown but the bigger question is who will they entrust to head this talented franchise moving forward.
