Christian McCaffrey missed the first eight games of the season with Achilles tendonitis. In that time period, the San Francisco 49ers struggled to get their offense going without the superstar in their backfield. Tonight, the game against the Buffalo Bills being his fourth since returning to the starting lineup.

Being a focal point of the 49ers attack meant the recently married superstar took the bulk of the load early on in this game. With the snow pouring down, McCaffrey ran his way to helping his team put the first points on the board.

But when the Bills returned the favor and went one over, Christian McCaffrey and his offense again went to play. He again went to work gaining major yards in helping his 49ers push down the field. They received a lifeline as a Bills penalty erased a Brock Purdy interception. But that interception reinforced the fact that they needed to feed their star running back.

On the next play, Purdy did exactly that as he tossed the ball to his backfield teammate. However, McCaffrey took two steps and then slid down even before any defender could get to him. He then got up and returned to the sideline, putting pressure on his right leg.

Replays showed the superstar’s left leg buckling the first time he planted his foot into the snow while received the ball. The reigning offensive player of the year was looked at by the team medical staff on the sidelines, but eventually went into the locker room.

49ers looked lost without Christian McCaffrey’s dynamic running game

Christian McCaffrey set up that first quarter field goal for the San Francisco 49ers. Once he left the game, noticeably, their offense grinded to a halt. They could not manage to score any points up until the end of the first half.

That situation continued as the Buffalo Bills carved out a substantial lead. The home team had used their comfort in that weather to end up winning the game 35-10. However, without McCaffrey, the chances of the visiting 49ers mounting a comeback look slimmer by the second.

To sum up the 28-year-old’s impact, the superstar back racked up 58 yards rushing and 14 yards receiving until that injury play took off five yards from that rushing total. That made up the bulk of their offense, and they could have made something had he stayed on the field.

But now they will have to wait to see how many games he could miss. If they do lose him for a period, Kyle Shanahan might as well shut him down. That will help him avoid any further injuries as the Madden curse continues to prove itself.
