Chris Canty believes Brock Purdy's "game manager" label, due to his talented teammates, warrants the 49ers delaying his payday—leaving Dan Orlovsky shocked.

Dan Orlovsky covered his face in shock after his ESPN colleague Chris Canty said he wasn’t on board with the San Francisco 49ers paying quarterback Brock Purdy close to $60 million a year. Canty pointed out the flaws in Purdy’s game while presenting his argument.
During Thursday’s segment of First Take, Canty revealed that he was against the 49ers potentially signing a big-money contract with Purdy. The Super Bowl winner wants to see more from the third-year signal caller before any deal.
Dan Orlovsky was in shock after hearing Canty’s perspective. The former NFL quarterback hid his face in the palm of his hands.
Regardless of how Orlovsky views the argument, it’s the stats that matter the most. Canty read out Purdy’s numbers when playing with Deebo, McCaffrey, Kittle, and the others as compared to when they are absent.

Chris Canty wants Brock Purdy to win without the elite help around him
The 49ers played back-to-back NFC title games and appeared in the 2023 Super Bowl while Brock Purdy was at the helm. He had a quarterback rating of 113.0.
However, as Canty pointed out, the majority of those numbers were when the 49ers fielded a full squad, comprising Kittle, Samuel, McCaffrey, Williams, and so on. The story is different in 2024.
After losing seven games, the Niners sit at the bottom of the NFC West and are on the verge of elimination from playoff contention. Purdy played a large part of the season without them due to injury troubles.
Purdy will be eligible to go from the least-paid starting quarterback to the highest in 2025, but if the Niners pay him, then he will have fewer funds available to procure more quality players. Moreover, the players aren’t getting younger.
Kittle and Williams are above 30 while Samuel and McCaffrey are closing in. If the Niners want to keep the core of the team intact, then they must agree on a favorable deal with Brock Purdy or take the hardest decision of trading him away.
