Brock Purdy set aside all the problems with the San Francisco 49ers for one day and sat down to cheer for his former college side, the Iowa State Cyclones, that took on the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday. Unfortunately, Purdy’s alma mater let him down on this occasion.

ASU won the fixture 19-45 and proved every bettor wrong who projected the Arizona school as the least favorite to bag the conference title for the first time since 1996. While Purdy and those associated with Iowa were unhappy with the defeat, one of his teammates celebrated.

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was out and about in his car and shared a video on social media calling out Purdy for Iowa’s loss. Aiyuk reminded his 49ers quarterback to pay the bet they had wagered before the game.

Running back Cam Skattebo lodged 16 rushes for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns, besides 2 receptions for 38 yards and 1 touchdown. Quarterback Sam Leavitt threw 12 completions for 219 yards and three touchdowns. The win made sure they qualified for the College Football Playoffs.

A brief history of Brock Purdy and Brandon Aiyuk’s college football career

Purdy spent four years as the starting quarterback for the Cyclones (2018-2021). He appeared in 48 games (started 46) and boasts a record of 29-17.

The 24-year-old threw 993 completions for 12,170 yards, 81 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions, along with 1177 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Purdy was a two-time First Team All-Big 12 and one second-team All-Big 12.

As for Aiyuk, the 28-year-old began his college career at Sierra College in 2016. He appeared in 20 games, catching 89 passes for 1533 yards and 19 receiving touchdowns.

In 2018, Aiyuk entered the transfer portal and ended up with the Sun Devils. After an underwhelming first year in Arizona, Aiyuk went off in his senior year, catching 65 receptions for 1192 yards (18.3 yards per catch) and scoring 8 touchdowns.

Since he left for the NFL, ASU had only one winning year (in 2021) in the PAC 12. The school moved to the BIG 12 in the offseason, and they won in the first year.

Purdy and Aiyuk have been to multiple NFC title games, winning one in 2023, and they appeared in the Super Bowl, which they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. The fifth-year receiver signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension before the start of the current season; however, he has been on the injured reserve after suffering an ACL injury in week 7.
