Deebo Samuel throws 49ers teammates under the bus for his recent struggles

Deebo Samuel, usually reserved about calling out teammates, broke his silence to express frustration over Brock Purdy not throwing him the ball enough.

It’s clear as day that Deebo Samuel is unhappy with how his season has panned out. The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver was chasing shadows most of the evening on Sunday night even though his team scored 38 points against the Chicago Bears.

Samuel only had three targets all game while Jauan Jennings caught two touchdown passes. Not only in the Bears game but in his last seven outings for the Niners, Samuel was targeted a mere 32 times, from which he caught 20 passes.

The situation is even more dire in the touchdown column. He has only scored one touchdown all year, which was back on October 10 against the Seattle Seahawks, and it was the last time he crossed 100 yards this campaign.

Sports Illustrated’s Jose Sanchez pointed out the flaws in Samuel’s game.

Samuel is a non-factor as a receiver. He can’t separate at all and is no better than an average receiver. It’s why he can’t do anything.

However, on Monday, Deebo Samuel wrote a short message on X that dropped like a bomb on the Niners fans. He indirectly called out both head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy, claiming he wasn’t seeing the ball like in the past.

Not struggling at all just not getting the ball.

With Brandon Aiyuk missing because of injury, he should see the ball more, but stats indicate his struggles. The Niners often used him from the backfield as a rusher to compensate. He leads the team in carries as a receiver with 32 for 92 yards (2.9 yards per carry) and scored one rushing touchdown.

Deebo Samuel wasn’t accusing his 49ers teammates

After beating the Bears in week 14, the Niners are 6-7 and have more than a 20% chance to reach the playoffs. So, calling teammates out during a very sensitive point of the season isn’t the smartest choice from a veteran.

Samuel later clarified himself, saying that his intention was never to criticize his teammates; he was merely pointing out the facts.

Just cause I voice my opinions don’t mean I’m hating on any of my teammates!!

Purdy’s form has seen a dip this year, but he’s still producing good numbers. In 12 games, Purdy has 233 completions for 3,032 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 8 picks with a passer rating of 98.7. There’s still time for the Purdy and Samuel magic to reignite in the remaining games as they push for a place in the wild card.
