Both the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers are coming off narrow losses in week 15. These two teams will face each other on Sunday at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

The Dolphins thought they were on track for a comfortable sixth-place finish in the AFC after beating the New York Jets, but a 12-20 loss against the Houston Texans the following week brought them back down to earth.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw three interceptions and gave away four turnovers. Star wide receiver Tyreek Hill lodged just 2 catches for 36 yards. The Dolphins ran the ball more often. Running back De’Von Achane carried the ball 12 times for 42 yards while veteran Raheem Mostert contributed with 6 carries.

On the other hand, Brock Purdy threw his 9th interception of the season in the Los Angeles Rams game while completing just 41% of passing attempts. None of the receivers managed more than four catches. Running back Isaac Guerendo rushed 16 times for 57 yards; however, he picked up an injury and will not be available to face the Dolphins.

This will be a battle between the Master and his apprentice. Mike McDaniel learned his coaching ideals while being part of Kyle Shanahan’s management from 2006 to 2008 and then from 2011 to 2021 before taking over as head coach at Miami.

The last time these two teams played each other was back on December 12, 2022. Shanahan’s 49ers secured a 33-17 victory. Tagovailoa threw 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions while Purdy had 2 TDs and 1 INT. Running back Christian McCaffrey carried 17 times for 66 yards along with 8 receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown.

Why the San Francisco 49ers can win?

The 49ers suffered a damaging defeat against the Rams. On top of it, they lost Guerendo, who replaced Jordan Mason and McCaffrey in the team. Brock Purdy has 247 completions for 3174 yards (65% completion rate), 15 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel has 10 catches, 5 drops, and zero touchdowns in his last five appearances. Tight end George Kittle leads the team with 60 receptions from 74 targets for 861 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Why the Miami Dolphins can win?

The Dolphins are in a similar situation as the 49ers. McDaniel’s team is also laden with injuries to key players. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle remains day to day while Grant Dubos is in the hospital after suffering a head injury, and veteran Odell Beckham Jr. is back at his hood after being released.

Tyreek Hill looks like a husk of his former self with 67 catches for 805 yards and 5 touchdowns, which is a far cry from his previous two seasons in Miami when he eclipsed 1700+ yards on both occasions.
