Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes started Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans and delivered a strong performance in the team’s 27-19 win. The 29-year-old Mahomes sustained a high ankle sprain during last Sunday’s victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Mahomes capped the Chiefs’ opening drive with an impressive 15-yard touchdown run. In a post-game interview, Mahomes downplayed the significance of the play, stating he didn’t feel like he was setting a tone.
However, the signal caller’s strengths ultimately set the stage for the Chiefs’ dominant performance. Mahomes completed 28 of 41 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing five times for 33 yards and an additional touchdown. Despite any potential discomfort from his ankle, he continued to perform effectively.
Following the victory, Mahomes expressed pride in his ability to overcome adversity and perform even when he was not physically strong.
The victory brings Kansas City closer to securing the top seed in the AFC playoffs. Mahomes will manage his ankle leading up to Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A victory in that game, or a Bills loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, will secure the No. 1 seed for the Chiefs. As the Chiefs prepare for their Christmas game against the Steelers, an assured first-round bye would be the perfect holiday gift.
Chris Simms admits injuries won’t stop Patrick Mahomes from playing
Patrick Mahomes shook off a critical ankle injury to showcase the superhuman ability to bounce back from any adversity. Despite claiming injuries, Mahomes set up a personal record with a longest touchdown run.
During his appearance on the Dan LeBatard Show, the host asked Chris Simms if Mahomes should play in the upcoming Christmas game. Simms responded that, regardless of the team’s desire to rest him, it would be extremely challenging to keep Mahomes off the field.
According to Simms, even Andy Reid describes Mahomes as “cutthroat” when it comes to winning football games. He believes the Chiefs should allow Mahomes to play if he’s able, but they must ensure he doesn’t overexert himself.
