Welterweights Gilbert Burns and Sean Brady are all set to lock horns this weekend at UFC Vegas 97 inside the Apex. It remains a crucial matchup for both fighters to advance further in the division. Given the BJJ background of both the fighters, fans are expecting a ‘black belt vs. black belt’ showdown. Burns, being the more experienced fighter, is rather excited about the ongoing narrative.

Gilbert Burns has now lost two straight fights; his most recent defeat came at UFC 299 against Jack Della Maddalena. The Brazilian is eager to bounce back despite suffering a devastating knockout loss. Burns was questioned about this BJJ clash against Sean Brady while discussing his impending bout with Michael Bisping. The former title contender stated that he is enthusiastic about the task.

I like it to be honest. If you wanna grapple, let's grapple. He's a black belt from Daniel Gracie. Yeah, he's tough bro…he beat down some high-level competition.

Burns is pleased that there is less of a difference in the rankings between him and his opponent. ‘Durinho’ has no interest in taking his opponent lightly but is confident about his grappling skills. Burns has submitted nine opponents throughout his professional career and has a distinct submission grappling experience.

On the other hand, Brady is a skilled BJJ black belt holder with five professional submission victories. He is 15-1 in his professional career and has faced notable opponents like Belal Muhammad and Kelvin Gastelum, among others. The young star can potentially enter the title picture with a win over the Brazilian fighter. As such, Brady expects to make an impression going into the fight this weekend.

Sean Brady promises to prove himself against ‘old’ Gilbert Burns

Gilbert Burns has odds of about +146 to start the fight as the underdog, even though he is ranked higher. Meanwhile, Brady is the favorite at -188. Although some believe Brady has an advantage due to his youth and recent performance, Burns’ expertise and will to win might create problems for Brady.

Burns is currently 38 years old and desperately needs to win to keep his title opportunities alive. On the flip side, after his loss against Belal Muhammad, Brady has done everything to get the winning momentum back. In a recent Interview, the American fighter talked about beating Burns and further solidifying his position as a young title contender.

I'm going to get out there and test my grappling against his. This is like my first ‘legends’ fight. I have to go out there are prove that I can beat one of the older guys who are still tough as nails. I'm a younger, stronger, better version of Gilbert.

Burns has the advantage when it comes to striking, even though both fighters are lethal while on the ground. He possesses knockout power and has competed against some of the top strikers in the division. Robert Whittaker thinks Burns’ cardio could provide issues for the Brazilian when facing Brady. As such, Brady will aim to give the veteran a run for his money at UFC Vegas 97.
