Fernando Alonso is the most experienced driver in Formula 1 history with 396 race starts. Nevertheless, the Spanish driver still possesses the hunger to win, having last won a race in 2013. Alonso has shown faith in Aston Martin, particularly with aero genius Adrian Newey joining the team next year.

The two-time world champion has declared his desire to win another F1 championship. Fernando Alonso last won the F1 title all the way back in 2006 against Michael Schumacher. Presently, Aston Martin is struggling in the midfield, a far cry from Alonso’s ambitions.

Now, things look promising for Lawrence Stroll‘s squad. Adrian Newey’s arrival will boost Aston Martin’s prospects for the future, with Honda becoming the exclusive power units partner from 2026. However, will Fernando Alonso reap the benefits of these changes?

Fernando Alonso can’t keep racing forever

Alonso is currently 43 years old. The Spanish driver undoubtedly remains quick as ever in Formula 1 and has shown no signs of slowing down. Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin contract extends till the 2026 season, the first year of the new regulations.

2026 will be Aston Martin’s best shot at the world championship as the car would have great influence from Adrian Newey. Moreover, it would be the first year with Honda power units. However, one must understand that the new regulations remain a big unknown, especially for a midfield team like Aston Martin.

It is likely that the Silverstone-based squad does not become a title contender right away in 2026. Aston Martin might need a couple more years to actually become a threat at the front. However, Fernando Alonso, who will be 45 in 2026 will likely not have much more time to waste. It might be all in for Alonso during the first year of the new rules.

Certainly, there are no doubts that the 2026 season would be the best chance for Alonso’s title ambitions in over a decade. However, a lot would depend on Aston Martin’s development and not solely on Adrian Newey. Every aspect of the team must work in tandem to ensure that it can fight at the front with the onset of the new rules. Fans would hope that Fernando Alonso can at least get the taste of victory once again by 2026.
