After defeating Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso rejoices ‘phenomenal result’ at the Brazilian GP as he gets his first podium win since Zandvoort
The Aston Martin team has opted to forego their recent upgrades and return to their original concept in a bid to rectify their performance slump.
Fernando Alonso celebrated a remarkable podium finish at the Brazilian GP, narrowly edging out Sergio Perez in a dramatic and nail-biting showdown at Interlagos. The Spaniard’s exceptional defensive skills and strategic manoeuvres were on full display as he secured third place in a photo finish.
Aston Martin and Alonso made a formidable start to the season, consistently gracing the podium. They maintained the second-best average performance, emerging as the sole challenger to Red Bull‘s supremacy. However, their fortunes dwindled sharply as the season unfolded. The team that secured six podium finishes in the first half of the season only managed to clinch one in the second half at Zandvoort.
After a string of disappointing races, the team, along with Alonso, reclaimed their place on the podium through a thrilling duel with Perez, earning it deservedly. The podium finish was a cause for celebration for Aston Martin, which had faced challenges and two DNFs in recent races. Alonso expressed his delight in his post-race interview.

Fernando Alonso claims his battle with Sergio Perez was 30 laps of pressure
The Alonso-Perez duel at the Brazilian Grand Prix provided thrilling moments. Alonso initially fell behind but fought back to third place. Meanwhile, Perez, also seeking a podium, made good use of his RB19 and sliced through the Mercedes duo to position himself behind the gearbox of Alonso’s Aston Martin.
Perez steadily closed in on Alonso, utilizing the DRS for overtaking attempts. However, Alonso defended his position, skillfully blocking Perez’s advances. This intense duel persisted for over 30 laps laps and finally on the penultimate lap, Perez managed to pass Alonso. But the Spaniard swiftly counterattacked on the final lap, reseizing third place into turn 4.

The duo raced neck and neck to the finish, resulting in a nail-biting photo finish, with Alonso securing third place by a mere half-tenth of a second. Alonso recounted the intense battle at the very end of the Sao Paulo GP.
For me, it was like 30 laps I had the pressure from Checo. When he passed me with two laps to go, I thought the podium was gone. Then he braked late at turn one, and I thought I would get him at turn 4.
In a race that saw Max Verstappen‘s dominant victory and Lando Norris in second, it was Alonso’s performance that thrilled fans and left the paddock buzzing. The Spaniard battled Perez for the final podium position putting on a remarkable show for the fans who cheered him on his 8th podium of the season.
