Sergio Perez‘s disastrous performance in the 2024 season means the Mexican driver runs the highest risk of being replaced. The team is yet to take a final call on Perez’s future despite securing a two-year contract extension early on in the season. However, Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has hinted at a final announcement as early as this week.
Helmut Marko revealed that there were ongoing negotiations regarding Sergio Perez‘s future in Formula 1. Moreover, the 81-year-old highlighted that there was an impending decision and announcement this week.
Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda are the front runners for the empty seat at Red Bull if Perez were to be ousted. Sources claim that the move has already been made, with Lawson being the team’s choice of replacement. However, the Mexican driver continued to remain confident over his future in Formula 1.
Shareholders being involved in the decision of Sergio Perez’s future at Red Bull
One of the major reasons for the discussions before ousting Sergio Perez was the massive financial backing of the driver. Perez’s sponsors from Mexico bought in massive money for Red Bull. As a result, these shareholders were also reportedly present in the decision-making of the driver’s future. Helmut Marko reckoned that this was the first time such a situation was being played. Regardless, Marko reiterated that negotiations were going on and asked the fans to be patient.
Red Bull’s form in the 2024 season was mediocre at best as Perez was also caught in the crossfire of struggles. The team must desperately work on their pace for the coming season to deem a better start. Moreover, time will tell who partners Max Verstappen at Milton Keynes in the 2025 season.
