Max Verstappen found himself at risk of losing the 2024 Drivers’ title. The Dutch driver had to push himself throughout the season to defend the championship. Now, Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen has highlighted that the pressure was really on the family this year.

Jos Verstappen was asked if his son’s historic campaign in 2023 was more relaxed compared to this year’s title battle. The former F1 driver asserted that this indeed was the case. So much so, that the senior Verstappen was ‘eating himself up’ during a few times this season.

Absolutely. Now, at times I was eating myself up.

The 52-year-old pointed out that on a few occasions, it was visible that Red Bull was going in the wrong direction. Jos Verstappen further found it hard not to call the team over the situation. Recently, Max Verstappen accepted that his father was engaged in mud-slinging against Christian Horner earlier this year.

Things just happened where you could see that things were going in the wrong direction in terms of performance. And then it was sometimes quite difficult not to pick up the phone and call that person.

Max Verstappen and Red Bull have had ‘better seasons’

For Max Verstappen, 2024 was the first real challenge since 2021. The Dutch driver managed to stay consistent and wrap up the title at the Las Vegas GP, with two races to spare. However, Jos Verstappen acknowledged that he and the team have had better seasons in the past when the 27-year-old has emerged victorious.

So yes, it was definitely difficult at times to deal with everything. We have had better seasons in which Max became champion.

Jos Verstappen noted

Certainly, the Verstappen family would hope that Red Bull is in a stronger position in 2025. Milton Keynes faces the risk of falling behind the likes of McLaren and Ferrari. As such, the Austrian giant has a lot of work to do over the winter break.
