Lando Norris made a solid recovery at the 2024 Azerbaijan GP to finish ahead of championship rival Max Verstappen. As things stand, the Brit is 59 points behind Verstappen in the driver’s standings and amidst this, the Ex-F1 driver Christijan Albers has given a damning verdict on Norris.
Christijan Albers genuinely believes that given what he has seen from Lando Norris in the ongoing campaign, the latter is not cut out to be a world champion. In his opinion, Norris is not as consistent as Max Verstappen.
He is not consistent. That's now the difference between world champion material and not. He just doesn't maximise. And a Max Verstappen does.Christijan Albers via GPblog.
Looking at the strong reaction of Albers, he has not held back in any way from criticizing Norris. Moreover, he has applauded the three-time world champion for how consistent he was when Red Bull had the fastest car.
Are the ‘papaya rules’ nothing more than a drama?
While Christijan Albers has brutally ripped into Lando Norris, he has also taken the time to give his opinion on the McLaren ‘papaya rules.’ The term has been massively discussed in F1 amidst the tussle between Oscar Piastri and Norris.
From Albers’s perspective, it is just drama created by the Woking-based outfit.
It's just a drama, really just a drama. They are just busy marketing: papaya rules here, papaya rules there.Christijan Albers via the same interview
After Baku, McLaren has managed to get a lead of 20 points over the Red Bull F1 team. However, in the driver’s championship, Norris was only able to close the gap to Verstappen by three points.
As indicated earlier, the margin between the two is still big, and if Andrea Stella and Co. are seriously targeting both titles, they can’t afford mishaps like Baku (quali outing). Also, when Norris and Piastri are starting at the front, they will have to give the utmost priority to Norris.
