Fourth & third and trailing by six points with five minutes until the end of the third quarter, San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody missed a crucial field goal from 41 yards. It proved to be a crucial moment for the 49ers while playing the Miami Dolphins.
The CBS Sports camera glided past the 49ers sideline and witnessed head coach Kyle Shanahan lose his cool. The usually calm Shanahan smashed his tablet on the ground in frustration.
Kickers are the last line of the offense. There’s already tension to score during a drive, and if the kicker goes on to miss the field goal attempt, the pressure keeps building, and eventually, that pent-up energy blows up.
Moody has had his chances in abundance, but the Michigan graduate’s inconsistency became an issue along the course of the season. He played all 17 games in his rookie year for the Niners and made 21 field goals from 25 with an accuracy rate of 84.0%, which has seen a sharp decline in 2024 with 23 made from 30 attempts (76.7%).

DraftSharks placed him at the 23rd spot among the 32 starting kickers in the NFL this year (based on the strength of the schedule).
Kyle Shanahan sounds off on Jake Moody’s miss against the Miami Dolphins
The Washington Commanders’ victory over the Philadelphia Eagles knocked the 49ers out of the NFC playoff race. Shanahan’s team could have done the same with the Dolphins by defeating them, but they tasted their ninth loss of the year (the first time since 2020).
Jake Moody‘s miss played a big part in the defeat, and Shanahan wasn’t too happy with it.
However, Shanahan refused to put the blame solely on the 25-year-old. The team in general has been very inconsistent. A few decisions here and there were enough to change the end result.
Moody still has a couple of games to change the impression about him. In week 17 they welcome the 13-2 Detroit Lions, and on the final day travel to divisional rivals’ home in Arizona to play the Cardinals.
