Liam Lawson declared he’s not ‘afraid’ of Max Verstappen as Red Bull teammate
Liam Lawson asserted that he isn’t afraid of going up against four-time world champion Max Verstappen at Red Bull in 2025.

Liam Lawson was the driver of choice for a promotion to Red Bull after Sergio Perez decided to part ways with the team. The Kiwi showcased a better race pace than Yuki Tsunoda and hence was selected for the seat at Red Bull. However, the 22-year-old will have to go against one of the best drivers in Formula 1, Max Verstappen at Red Bull in 2025.
Liam Lawson opened up regarding his thoughts on going up against Max Verstappen in 2025. The Red Bull-bound driver highlighted that he wasn’t afraid of this fact. Moreover, Lawson noted that he wouldn’t want anyone other than Verstappen as his teammate since the latter was the ‘best’ in Formula 1.
I’m not afraid of that [facing the same fate as Albon/Gasly] In fact, I wouldn’t want anyone more as a teammate than Max. He’s the best in the sport.

Lawson reckoned that driving alongside Verstappen would be very ‘educational’ for him. Also, looking at the Dutchman’s racing data and learning from it would be interesting for the Kiwi. Finally, the 22-year-old concluded that racing against the reigning world champion would be the ultimate challenge for him in the pinnacle of motorsport.
It would be very educational to compete against him, to be able to study his data every weekend and see exactly how he approaches it. It would be the ultimate challenge for me. So no, I’m not afraid.

Max Verstappen won his fourth world championship in the 2024 season under difficult circumstances. As a result, Liam Lawson felt super excited to work alongside Verstappen and learn from a champion. The Kiwi further noted that he wouldn’t undoubtedly learn from the former’s expertise.

Red Bull has already undergone a massive personnel change amongst the engineering team. The team will have to work extremely hard on their form to start the 2025 season on a better note. Lawson could contend for the victories alongside Verstappen if provided with the right setup.
