There is a stark contradiction between the NFL and the annual Madden games released by EA. The former is filled with surprises and one never knows what to expect but with the Madden franchise, every year, the game is more or less similar and fans know what they will get. However, this year there was one football game that excited fans of the game.
That game is EA Sports’ College Football 25. The iconic game was the first college football video game made after a hiatus of 11 years. It has lived up to the hype and the numbers confirm the same.
EA Sports College Football 25 has been ranked as the bestselling game of 2024 as per a report from Circana. Since its release earlier this year, the game has over five million active players and has earned $500 million in just the first two weeks of its release. The profits from the game were noticeable on EA’s balance sheet as the company made a profit of $2.03 billion in that quarter.
College Football 25 has become the bestselling sports game in U.S. history
Ranking behind College Football 25 are the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Helldivers II, and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on the list. Apart from becoming the most-sold sports game in the nation’s history, the game has found a spot in the list of the top 50 best-selling games of all time.
This means that it has eclipsed the estimated $861 million that NBA 2K21 brought in for 2K Sports and Take-Two. This year’s college football game was one that truly lived up to the hype. It is surprising to see it beat the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 which has consistently proven itself as being the highest-grossing game in comparison to its competitors.
The good thing about having annual college football video games is that Madden will no longer be the only go-to option for fans. A standard copy of this year’s College Football 25 fetches $69.99 whereas the deluxe version and MVP edition are pricier at $99.99 and $149.99 respectively.
Despite the remarkable sales numbers, the players that make the game what it is remain underpaid. As per the negotiations between EA and the players, the latter receive $600 and a copy of the game. There is no provision for royalties, which is unfortunate.
