Say what you might about Kirk Cousins, he has always been a likable person. It would be fair to say that the quarterback does not have any haters. Apart from his recent struggles on the football field, Cousins is an orthodox religious man who believes in the power of prayer.
This is why despite being benched by the Atlanta Falcons in the team’s Week 16 game, Kirk Cousins did not sulk or allow his ego to get in the way of playing his role as a mentor to rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
As the Falcons geared up to enter the stadium, Kirk Cousins could be seen leading a prayer for Michael Penix Jr. to perform well in his first career start. The gesture albeit a small one is significant because it boosts the rookie’s morale and gives him confidence heading into a packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium filled with fans eager to witness the debut of their potential future franchise QB.

Kirk also gave Penix a pep talk, preparing him for today, despite being benched. Kirk Cousins is a true class act ❤️pic.twitter.com/f8GGoHfk0M
Kirk Cousins took time to check in on Michael Penix before the game
In addition to praying with the rookie, Cousins gave him a pep talk in the locker room and played a significant role in preparing him for today’s game against the New York Giants. In this aspect, the Falcons could not have asked for a better veteran than Cousins to be mentoring Penix Jr.
His professionalism is laudable. Kirk Cousins has all the reason to abstain from mentoring or being of much help to the eighth overall pick of the 2024 draft. After all, Penix Jr. was drafted right after the Falcons signed him to a four-year contract with the hope that he would succeed Cousins. However, the veteran is a class act.
Kirk Cousins will be spending the rest of his time with the Atlanta Falcons on the sidelines. The team is expected to release him after the season ends before they are liable to pay him his bonus in March.
For now, no team has expressed interest in signing Cousins as his interception problem this season has become a cause for concern. Hopefully, the quarterback gets another shot in a better situation and can make a comeback.
