The Chicago Bears made some significant changes in the leadership positions which featured bringing in Ryan Poles as the new general manager and Matt Eberflus as the head coach. With the change comes a new approach to how things are done along with a rejuvenated drive for success.
When he was first hired, Ryan Poles spoke to the media to discuss how he would bring success to the Bears, saying “We’re gonna build through the draft. We’re gonna acquire young, fast, and physical football players. We’re going to be selective in free agency, and we’re going to connect evaluation with valuation. We’re gonna have a relentless approach to fix our weaknesses. We’re gonna maintain great self-awareness of who we are. We’re gonna solve problems with open communication and candor, and we’re gonna consistently put players in a position to succeed.”
Poles’ final line was one that’ll fire up any Bears fan “And the last thing, the most important piece is we’re gonna take the North and never give it back.”
Being selective in free agency certainly is something that the Bears have done as they haven’t looked to make a huge splash as some of their notable signings, receivers Byron Pringle and Equanimeous St. Brown only cost them $7 million. Poles recently explained the thinking behind the moves.
Ryan Poles explains why the Chicago Bears have been gunshy in free agency
Ryan Poles recently spoke with Kevin Fishbain of ‘The Athletic’ and was quoted saying “Why are we being patient? Why are we looking for a specific type of player to bring in? It’s to create an atmosphere and a culture and a roster that’s gonna be able to sustain success over a long period of time.”
Considering the major trade that sent Khalil Mack back to the AFC West that saw the Bears get a 2nd rounder from this year’s draft along with a 6th from next year, it’s clear that Ryan Poles’ new atmosphere is being created already. Whether or not it will turn into success in 2022 is yet to be seen but, there’s hope for the future for Bears fans now.
