“He’s got to improve,” Bears GM Ryan Poles makes an HONEST admission about QB Justin Fields’ future and development
Justin Fields received a huge vote of confidence from Bears general manager Ryan Poles after a devastating season for the franchise.
The Chicago Bears had an appalling 2022/23 season, as they ended up with a 3-14 record. With second year quarterback Justin Fields at the helm of things, it was always going to be a tough ask, but the franchise had plenty of other issues plaguing them throughout the season.
In contrast, Justin Fields emerged as one of the brighter spots for the Bears with his stunning performances. The 23-year-old finished the year rushing for 1143 yards in his 15 starts with eight touchdowns on 160 carries.
Fields’ rushing record was only second to fellow Baltimore Ravens‘ quarterback Lamar Jackson’s record of 1206 yards back in 2019. This record particularly speaks volumes about the quality Fields showed on the field in only his second year.

Justin Fields will most likely retain his starting QB position in the upcoming season
Bears general manager Ryan Poles returned the faith on his starting quarterback as he spoke at the season end press conference after their final game against the Vikings. He spoke of how Fields grew through the season and that there’s still room for improvement on his part, especially his passing side.
“I thought Justin did a good job. I thought we changed a lot, we adapted, we tried to put him in a position to be successful. He showed the ability to be a playmaker, be impactful. He can change games quickly. Does he have room to grow? He does. He has to get better as a passer, and I’m excited to see him take those steps as we move forward,” Poles said.
“I’m excited for the direction he’s going,” Poles said. “As I mentioned before, he knows where he has to improve. I think he mentioned that the other day. We’re excited about his development and where he goes next. He showed ability to be impactful with his legs. There’s flashes with his arm. Now if we can put that together, I think we have something really good.”
Despite the Bears’ devastating season, Poles almost confirmed Fields’ status as the starting quarterback for the next season too. With the Bears owning the No.1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft, speculations were being made if they would draft a quarterback.
However, Poles clarified that such a decision will only be taken if he’s “absolutely blown away” a particular player, which in reality is as good as saying no.
