This year’s Hard Knocks has ended on an emotional note as it portrayed the emotional farewell of safety Adrian Colbert from Chicago. After spending two seasons in the Windy City, he was ultimately cut off the roster and entered the free agency market.
While bidding goodbye to Colbert, General Manager Ryan Poles was seen with heavy tears in his eyes, which reflected that NFL executives are way more invested in the players than the fans consider them. Having the strict 53-man roster rule, the Chicago Bears had to make the hard decision of letting go of some of his players.
On the final day of the roster cutdown, it was Colbert’s turn. However, the process became quite emotional as Poles couldn’t hold back his tears and had to leave the room for a moment before returning to give a warm hug and best wishes for the future to the journeyman safety. Even though these roster decisions are made on football merits, the personal connections developed between individuals often turn out to be tearful.
Regardless of how things ended, the Bears are looking forward to an optimistic future with star rookie signal-caller Caleb Williams leading a strengthened offensive line ready to reclaim the contender status for the team. At present, the team is preparing for a showdown in the opening game against the Tennessee Titans on September 8.
Adrian Colbert’s journey ends in the Chicago Bears
Even though Colbert’s journey in the Windy City comes to an end, his future would take him to better opportunities as a fruit of his hardship in life. The safety’s journey to the league hasn’t been an easy one as Hard Knocks portrayed before his departure.
He fought back a life-threatening accident in childhood when he was hit by a car going at a speed of 55 miles per hour while riding his back on the streets. He went into a coma for two whole weeks and was even told that there was a high chance that he might not be able to play gridiron again in life.
But since Colbert is here, it seems he defied the odds and entered the league in 2017 after being picked by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round. Since then, he has played for six teams the latest being the Chicago for 44 games in total. Perhaps, the safety’s tough journey till here is what made Poles even more emotional while cutting him off.
