The expectation of seeing Justin Herbert go nuclear under Jim Harbaugh was dealt a massive blow when the quarterback hurt his foot earlier this month. The doctors deemed he would miss out on the entire preseason football.
Harbaugh’s Chargers got off to the worst possible start, losing both of their friendlies with Easton Stick and Max Duggan alternating behind the center. They combined put up just 12 points in those two games, leading to the end of Duggan’s time in LA.
With Herbert on the sidelines, Chargers’ fans were gearing themselves up for another long season until some positive news arrived from the camp. The Athletic’s Daniel Popper reported that Justin Herbert was back in training on Monday. The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov backed up the claims.
Great news for the #Chargers: Justin Herbert was spotted back on the practice field today in uniform and helmet for the first time since being diagnosed with a plantar fascia injury on August 1st.

The 26-year-old took part in 7-on-7 drills, and not for once it seemed he had missed almost a month of training. He simply zipped the ball that made head coach Jim Harbaugh giddy.
Jim Harbaugh attests Justin Herbert’s presence in practice making Chargers camp excited
If there’s one person who is looking forward to seeing Justin Herbert shine, then it’s none other than Jim Harbaugh himself. The veteran head coach, who returned to the NFL after winning the CFP trophy with Michigan, has goals of becoming a Super Bowl winner.
He came close during his last stint in the league while coaching the San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh specifically chose the Chargers because he has been a big fan of Herbert since his Oregon days.
After the recent practice, Harbaugh explained that he was in awe of the Pro Bowler’s skills.
It was great. I thought I heard music—the voice of angels, maybe. I was excited… [His teammates] were excited, too. I don't know if they heard the angels singing like I did.Jim Harbaugh said per the Chargers’ official website
The coaching staff did not put Herbert in the 11-on-11 drill right away. He mostly practiced 7-on-7, a 2-minute drill, and then a final 7-on-7 period.

He reportedly completed 11 of 12 passing attempts, finding Cornelius Johnson, Luke Benson, and Donald Parham Jr. twice. Harbaugh said the practice was good with a capital ‘G.’
Herbert’s return may be an exciting prospect for the Chargers, but it’s more than likely Harbaugh will keep him away from their final pre-season game against the Dallas Cowboys as a precaution. There’s no set timeline of when he will start a game, but if the Chargers want to get off to a winning start, then it should be sooner rather than later.
