NFL set to bring about decisive change in head coach appointment interviews following Brian Flores’ allegations
The NFL overcame a major controversy a couple of months ago after former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores made allegations of racism against several franchises in the league in the hiring process of their head coaches.
He had alleged that the franchises did not maintain the Rooney rule, of giving a fair chance to coaches of colour and just brought in applications to make up the numbers. Therefore to bring about parity in the hiring of head coaches across the league, the NFL has started to ponder over a few rule changes in the hiring process of head coaches.
Following Brian Flores’ allegations, the NFL has brought in 2 new rules
The NFL passed two resolutions this week, to make two very significant changes in the system and is all set to stay put until the 31st of May, 2024.
Teams cannot interview a head-coaching candidate who is currently employed by another NFL team until the third day after that team’s Week 18 game has ended. This is especially true for assistant coaches on teams who did not make the playoffs or were given a first-round bye. Assistant coaches for teams playing in the wild-card round cannot be interviewed until the following Tuesday or Wednesday.
Candidates employed by other teams are not eligible for in-person interviews until all wild-card games have concluded. Only candidates employed by the team hiring a head coach or candidates not already employed by the NFL are eligible for in-person interviews before the end of the wild-card round.
