A Brian Flores-Deshaun Watson team up in Cleveland? Browns to interview former Dolphins’ HC for the defensive coordinator spot

Brain Flores was almost successful in hiring Deshaun Watson as the quarterback of the Miami Dolphins but owner Stephen Ross nixed the deal.

The 2022 regular season has ended and with that comes the firing of coaches all around the league, just like clockwork. The Houston Texans have parted ways with head coach Lovie Smith, Arizona Cardinals fired Kliff Kingsbury after yet another disappointing season.

After a disappointing 7-10 losing season, the Cleveland Browns have fired defensive coordinator Joe Woods who held the position for three years. The Browns have now requested permission from the Pittsburgh Steelers to interview their linebacker coach, Brian Flores, for the vacant position.

This could mean that Deshaun Watson and Brian Flores could finally team up after the Miami Dolphins refused to sign the QB, who was neck-deep in sexual harassment lawsuits.

Brian Flores, former head coach of the Miami Dolphins, made the headline last year after he was fired by the club and he took down the whole league with him citing racial discrimination. Despite listing many teams in his lawsuits, Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Steelers, agreed to hire him as the linebackers coach. There is no doubt that Flores is a great defensive coach.

The testament to this statement is that the Miami Dolphins still haven’t changed Flores’ defensive in-staff. Flores’ shift to Cleveland might benefit them greatly given the defensive arsenal at their disposal in Myles Garrett, Jordan Elliott, and Taven Bryan.

Another reason Brian Flores would fit right in Cleveland is his bond with quarterback Deshaun Watson. His love for the QB and the QB’s for him is well-known to everybody in the league. So much so that Flores convinced the Dolphins to sign Watson because he didn’t like Tua Tagovailoa. Stephen Ross, owner of the Dolphins, almost gave in to his demands but backed out at the last minute.

The Dolphins dodged a bullet with that one as Watson was handed an 11-game suspension by the NFL for breaching the league’s personal conduct policy. Browns head coach Kevin is on the hot seat himself after delivering his second losing season in his three years in Cleveland. The team’s defense is in shambles following Jadeveon Clowney’s exit from the team.

Clowney’s public rant about the team favoring Myles Garrett over him got him ousted from the team’s practice and sent home. He is sure not to come back to Cleveland in 2023. So, maybe Brian Flores’ onboarding in Cleveland might be beneficial for the team and Deshaun Watson might finally be united with his favorite coach.
