Ever since LIV Golf was launched, there has been a massive debate on which tour is better, them or the PGA Tour. While LIV Golfers have since then competed against PGA Tour stars in major events, a direct match between them had not taken place.
This will change in December though. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler from the PGA Tour will team up to take on LIV Golfers Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. The 18-hole match dubbed “Showdown” will see the winners receive $10 million in cryptocurrency as the prize.
This event will mark the first time that stars from two tours will have a direct confrontation. The winners will receive CRO Cronos as per reports.
This currency is reported to be the native token of the Cronos blockchain created by Crypto.com. As of November 2024, it stands at 28th position in the world’s top cryptocurrencies.
This will also mark the first time in a sporting event where the winner will receive cryptocurrency instead of a cash prize. CEO of Crypto.com Kris Marzalek said that this has the ability to ‘reshape’ the sports and entertainment industries.

The event will be interesting to see as Koepka and DeChambeau have had some issues with each other before. Despite being league mates, the two stars have taken some shots at each other. However, in recent times, they have downplayed this ‘beef’.
Following the announcement of the event, Koepka had a hilarious response. He would repost, DeChambeau’s announcement tweet and wrote, “Did we just become best friends?“.

The timing of this event is interesting. It comes at a time when the PGA Tour and PIF, the body that backs LIV Golf, continue to be in merger talks. As per reports, the two entities are yet to reach a final agreement that could reunite the sport and end the civil war.
