The first day of Wimbledon started with a bang right on the very first day during the match between Max Purcell and Andrey Rublev. In the first round of Wimbledon 2023, the duo began with great aggression and determination, with the favorite Andrey Rublev winning the first set confidently by 6-3.
However, more interestingly, the main highlight of the match was when Rublev was at the second set point and there was a decision that went against Purcell. The Australian then showed complete rage against the chair umpire’s decision.Â
Rublev’s serve was met with an unsuccessful return by Purcell who challenged it. The chair umpire didn’t however allow the challenge, eventually angering the Aussie.
Citing the umpire’s call as the reason for his distraction, He said, “I sacrificed my shot to challenge the ball”.
How Max Purcell was the first Australian to get knocked out at Wimbledon?
Max Purcell was very determined to make a mark on the first day but was badly beaten by the Russian in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. The match lasted for over an hour and a half, and Purcell showed signs of aggression only in the second set. Purcell was leading the second set 5-2 but lost 19 points consecutively to give away the second set as well.
He tried almost every sort of shot, from dicing to volleys and even an underarm serve, but couldn’t protect the match from going into the hands of the Russian. However, the main concern regarding the match that has been highlighted the most was that he was denied a challenge from the umpire for Rublev’s second set point.
