In a recent press conference, Felix Auger-Aliassime shared his feelings about his abysmal performance this year. He stated that he tries to remain “stoic” under such pressure and expectations.
On August 9, Auger-Aliassime faced qualifier Max Purcell at the Canadian Open. His losing streak continued as the Australian player dominated him. He lost 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets.
The Canadian star rose to prominence in 2022, when he showed immense talent and promise. He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open by defeating seeded players like Alejandro Fokina, Dan Evans, and Marin Cilic. He lost to No. 2 seed Danill Medvedev in five sets in the quarterfinals. At the French Open, he met Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. He became the third player to take Nadal to five sets at the tournament.
Gradual decline in 2023
Augar-Aliassime was the defending champion at the Rotterdam Open. However, he lost to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the quarterfinals. He shockingly lost in the first round of the French Open to Fabio Fogini. He also conceded in the first round of Wimbledon. His losses keep piling up this year and have startled fans all over the world. He has a win-loss record of 13-13 this season. His last victory was his run at the Indian Wells Masters in March, where he reached the quarterfinals.
He has dropped in rankings from World No. 6 to No. 12, putting him out of the top ten. Some have attributed the 23-year-old’s losing streak to his coach and Nadal’s uncle, Toni Nadal. They are even suggesting he fire him.
He said that, ‘’When you step onto the pitch, you’re not very confident, and for some reason things don’t go your way, and you wonder why, and you try to stay calm and find solutions. The reality is that you have to go to the field. You don’t have to, you know, run away and be scared. I have to… I don’t know how to put it. You have to be a man and not be afraid of losing. And whatever happens, do my best.”
Amidst all of this chaos, Augar-Aliassime remains undeterred and poised. He explained that he feels that one has to go on the field regardless of their fear of wanting to run away. He also shared that one’s mindset should be to not be afraid of losing and to give their best effort during a match.
