While the tennis world might focus on the bromance between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios, there’s another Australian and European bromance brewing on the ATP Tour. The pair in discussion is Norway’s Casper Ruud and Max Purcell of Australia. The two 25-year-olds have been friends for a long time now. It’s the fans who are getting to know about them only now.
The duo clashed in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open with Ruud finally coming out on top. The former World No. 2 won the match 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) in 3 hours and 50 minutes at the Margaret Court Arena.
It was one of the many marathon matches that took place in the Grand Slam’s first week. Purcell’s 65 unforced errors and 93 winners in comparison to Ruud’s 19 unforced errors and 44 winners was one of the big talking points.
Following their epic clash that lasted nearly 4 hours, the duo was seen together during the cool-down. Fans were surprised to see them together in the locker room after the clash. One particular Twitter user then brought to everyone’s notice the long duration of their relationship.
Purcell’s sleazy comments fully directed at pulling the leg of the Norwegian got highlighted which included comments like ‘You are one good looking man, is there anything you can’t do, I would f*ck you’.
The comments sent fans into a frenzy owing to the nature of the words. Ruud’s eventual comment on their friendship going back to their Junior days cleared up all the speculation. It thus made it clear that the comment was nothing but banter between the two.
Casper Ruud’s campaign at the 2024 Australian Open also ends
Going into the clash against Casper Ruud, Max Purcell had previously defeated qualifier Mate Valkusz over four sets. As Ruud emerged victorious, it was the end of the campaign for the local lad but the Norwegian also didn’t survive for much longer.
The 11th seed went down fighting to British No. 1 Cameron Norrie. The 19th-seeded southpaw won the match 4-6, 6-7(9), 6-4, 6-3. The match was played out over 3 hours and 3 minutes before Norrie came out on top.
The defeat for Ruud now means he is yet to go past the fourth round in Melbourne Park. As for Purcell, reaching the second round becomes his best result at his home Slam. The World No. 45 is yet to reach the third round at any Major so far in his career.
